But while the gated plantation homes and polo grounds are still there, hoteliers are angling to attract a hipper and younger crowd. In the spring, when the high season tapers off, you’re just as likely to see fashionistas from New York City throwing back cocktails at the pompously chic Sandy Lane Hotel as tea-sipping octogenarians. Getting there is also easier. JetBlue has new, daily nonstop flights from Kennedy Airport, which means you can leave in the morning and hit the beach by lunch.

Guiness World Record Attempt in Barbados

Tomorrow morning at 6am, a friend of BPL’s is kicking off a Guiness World Record Attempt.

Al Sandeman is attempting to set a new world record for the most amount of birdies (Golf) in one day.

He is attempting to fit in 8 rounds of golf in the 12hrs allocated him.

The Sandy Lane Hotel has kindly allowed him to use the Country Club for his World Record Attempt.

Furthermore, Al is turning the challenge into an opportunity to raise money for charity; The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust.

It is a late call, but I would like to offer all those that read our blogs the opportunity to sponsor Al’s attempt with a Bds$ amount per birdie; Al is aiming for 40!

Vanessa Williams takes executive role at Barbados’ Sandy Lane

Vanessa Williams has been appointed executive assistant manager/sales, marketing and hotel operations at Sandy Lane in Barbados.

Williams will report directly to general manager Robert Logan.

A native of Johannesburg, Williams joins Sandy Lane with more than 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry.

Prior to her new role, she was hotel manager/executive assistant manager sales & marketing at Raffles L’Ermitage in Beverly Hills, California. Before that she was director of marketing at the Intercontinental Hong Kong and director of sales and marketing at Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong.

Justine Picardie has a nice piece in the Telegraph on Barbados’ colonial past, the Coral Reef Club, St. Nicholas Abbey, Fisherpond and Miss Marple…

There is much about Barbados that has changed since its day as a British colony, but as the gin and tonics clink, you can still see why the island became known as Little England, or Bimshire (the origins of which are obscure). Unlike other Caribbean isles, fought over by a variety of invaders, Barbados was under uninterrupted British control from the first landing of sailors in 1625 until the coming of independence in 1966. There seems to be an even greater concentration of cricket pitches and polo fields here than in the Home Counties, and the place names, like the architecture, are testament to its colonial past (Chancery Lane, Clapham, Hastings, Scarborough).

Businessmen are moving here, and now acclaimed pastry chefs… What brain drain?

Acclaimed pastry chef Claire Clark has turned her back on plans to open a business in London, accepting an offer to become executive pastry chef at iconic Barbados luxury resort Sandy Lane.

Clark, a two-time winner of the Craft Guild of Chefs’ Pastry Chef of the Year award, spent nearly four years at Thomas Keller’s three-Michelin starred French Laundry in Napa Valley, California.
