Sport Tourism – The BTA focus on another avenue for the tourism sector

Posted by Maxwell in Tourism on July 16th, 2009

images1Following on from my blog post on July 9th, Health awarenes tourism – another string in the Bow for Barbados’s Tourism sector I would like to draw your attention to an article posted today  on www.ttglive.com reporting David Rice’s (incoming president and CEO of the BTA) recent comments regarding Sport Tourism in Barbados.

He views it as an untapped yearly market. Whilst we have sports such as golf attracting tourists to the island, this typically occurs during the 4 month winter period.

I for one love my sports and would be very happy to see the BTA improve facilities in Barbados so that we can attract sport minded tourists. Furthermore, we would see a knock-on affect within the local population who would gain from more facilities and structured training sessions.

I wonder what David Rice has in mind?

Cynthia Calvert would rather be in Barbados

Posted by Jonathan in Tourism on July 16th, 2009

Compelling words from Cynthia Calvert at the Texas Tribune.

If you want a holiday, come to the Caribbean. If you want to upgrade, come to Barbados. Chay David, director of corporate communications for the Barbados Tourism Authority, told me that over a lobster dinner on the beach in Bridgetown, Barbados last, December.

Seeking a holiday, and definitely enjoying the upgrade, I spent a three-day weekend on this lovely spot in the most easterly of the Caribbean islands, a tiny dot on most world maps with an area of just more than 165 square miles, 60 of which are coastline.

“Proposed passenger tax increases to the Caribbean – let’s unite and fight!”

Posted by Maxwell in Tourism on July 13th, 2009

Those were the words released in an article published this Saturday on The Caribbean Net News website, titled UK-based Caribbean leaders unite against proposed passenger tax increases!

In the article, increased passenger taxes for UK originating travelers is openly discussed as well as how they are calculated based on distance from London to the destination country’s capital.  An interesting read for those of us who wonder how travel between the UK and Barbados will continue to cost us more, whilst the airlines continue to cut costs.
