A heads up for tenants on their Barbados Light & Power service

Posted by Monique in Services on August 30th, 2010

Did you know that as a tenant, you can achieve 10% off of your electricity bill, once you transfer the account into your name?

We’ve been renting for the last 4 years only to be advised by a rep at BL&P that the advantages of transferring the account into your name is the discount you get each month off of your bill.  Until fairly recently, the rep advised that if in the property manager’s name, BL&P ranks the property under ‘General Service’ and this discount becomes null and void.

However, the rep also advised that they changed this rule a few months back so that the property management company can now change their ‘General Service’ accounts to ‘Domestic Service’, allowing tenants to be eligible for the 10% discount.

Considering how high the fuel charges are these days and the fact the price per joule has doubled, we could really have done with this knowledge, say, 2 years ago?!

Many of you might have been aware of this already, but for those of you who weren’t, either demand that your property manager switches the tariff bracket that you are in or take the time to go in and transfer your BL&P account to your name…

Barbados GuideThere are already many tourist guide websites for Barbados, but Barbados Guide is a new one that has just come to our attention, although it seems to have been operating for some time.

The Barbados Guide is your comprehensive guide to “Little England” – one of the most diverse islands in the Caribbean. From influence of British forebears to the shopping and nightlife that make it famous, learn more about the hidden gem that is Barbados.

I really like the home page on this website as a lot of the information is available at-a-glance.

Pilates with Lana

Posted by Monique in Services on June 7th, 2010

Pilates is a series of movements and exercises designed by Joseph Pilates to assist the body with muscular imbalances and bad postural habits that we are either born with or develop over time through our daily routines.

Pilates is the perfect antidote to the pressures and strains of modern living. If you play a sport regularly, work in front of a computer and/ or do a lot of driving, Pilates will improve your life.

I take regular lessons from Lana Sealy, a very experienced and respected Pilates instructor working locally in Barbados.

Lana orginally trained as a dancer at the New World School of the Arts, after graduation she worked professionally as a member of the Repertory Understudy Group with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, New York. During her time in the States, Lana started studying Pilates, a natural fit for a full-time dancer. Lana now has several Pilates qualifications including one from the Kane School of Core Integration.

After returning to Barbados in 2007, Lana now teaches Dance and Pilates at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination as well as Surfside Wellness Centre and Artsplash Barbados, focusing on alignment, rehabilitation, injury prevention and toning.

Last year, Lana attended classes in New York focusing on Pilates for people with Osteoporosis. In July she travelled on a luxury yacht throughout the Mediterranean as the Pilates instructor on board and in September she returned to the vessel by special request for the season in the South of France.

Lana is currently pursuing teaching hours towards her Pilates Method Alliance Exam in 2010 for her accreditation as a Master Pilates Instructor.

Pilates can be used as a tool to strengthen the core, realign anatomical structures to assist with rehabilitation, as well as prevent injuries and pin point muscular imbalances or just to tone and develop long lean muscles.

Special modifications are made for people with arthritis, osteoporosis, spinal injuries, pregnancy and many more.

Classes are done in six week sessions and are conducted in small groups to ensure individual attention.

Pilates is good for athletes and anyone with injuries or just looking to get in shape and tone up.

Classes are open to both men and women!

$9.5M in roundabout construction — Nation News

Posted by Jonathan in Services on April 22nd, 2010

Minister of Transport, John Boyce

Government is spending close to BDS$9.5 million to have three major roundabouts in Barbados completed.

Speaking today at a tour, Minister of Transport and Works John Boyce said they had heard the pleas of residents and Highways users to have these areas fixed.

He was at the time at the starting point of the tour – the contentious intersection at Lancaster on the Ronald Mapp Highway where quite a few motorists have lost their lives.

The tour also visited the Boarded Hall Roundabout and that at Coral Ridge in Christ Church, which has met a few challenges.

At Lancaster, C O Williams workmen were busy on the site, which is contracted at $BDS3.2 million and expected to be finished within the next five months.

Boyce in assessing the work being undertaken, said they understood the kind of urgency in transiting East-West at this junction, noting it was difficult at the best of times, and near impossible during peak traffic.

What makes Cobblers Cove Hotel unique…

Posted by Monique in Services on March 18th, 2010

There are a few things that make Cobblers Cove Hotel one of a kind and keep visitors coming back for more.  I’ve listed below what may be worth noting:

  • In order to keep the hotel fresh, a selection of rooms (usually 10 out of 40 a year) are re-upholstered by fabric suppliers such as Colfax & Fowler every year
  • All medical supplies are supplied by St John’s Ambulance from the UK and all staff are trained by St John’s Ambulance in First Aid, and then have to take the refresher course every 3 to 4 years
  • Cobblers Cove has many ‘old school staff’ who have been there for about 10, 15 and even 20 years
  • The head Chef is an Irish guy, Brian Porteus. Brian is a classically French trained chef who has collected his invaluable international playing experience in and on some of the world’s most exclusive restaurants, hotels and cruise liners, as well as was head chef and proprietor of Pordylo’s Restaurant his homeland in Kilkenny, Ireland
  • Cobblers Cove also has a Pastry Chef, Jennifer Gerbis from the USA responsible for an array of delicious treats that will delight your palette
