The Kristen Lopez Medical Trust Fund

Posted by Monique in Living in Barbados on February 22nd, 2010

The Kristen Lopez Medical Trust Fund has been set up by Kristin’s family in order to help her receive the proper treatment that she needs as a recently diagnosed A.M.L patient.

Acute Myeloid Leukemia or A.M.L is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells, characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal white blood cells that accumulate in the bone marrow and interfere with the production of normal blood cells.

Kristin is a young, determined young woman who as you will read below has been taken away from her her tennis scholarship in the USA to receive chemotherapy.

If you would like to get involved, details of this trust fund are shown below and there is also a Facebook group which you may join.

We hope that Kristin stays strong and know that she has an expansive support group of friends and family by her side to help her through this.

Please read the below from the Founders of The Kristin Lopez Medical Trust Fund:

Dear Friends,

I am sure that you are aware of the tragic situation that has befallen Kristen Lopez.

Kristen who is currently on a tennis scholarship in the USA has been diagnosed with A.M.L, a very aggressive form of leukemia. Kristen is undergoing her first stage of chemotherapy now and all indications are that this will be a lengthy and extremely difficult and expensive process for the Lopez family.

In an effort to help defray some of the considerable cost for treatment, travel accommodations etc., we the Friends of Ocean View Tennis have established the “Kristen Lopez Medical Trust Fund” of which Archie Cuke, David Sumpter and Adrian Brancker are the trustees and we are asking the corporate friends of Ocean View tennis to generously support this cause.

The Trust Fund has been established at BNB, the account number is 018288232001.

Kindly make your cheques payable to “The Kristen Lopez Medical Trust Fund”

Your donations will be greatly appreciated and will contribute tremendously towards Kristen’s successful recovery.

Yours truly,

Adrian Brancker
Archie Cuke

Some of you were enquiring whether locals could apply for the field volunteer position being offered by The Barbados Sea Turtle Project and I have received the following information from the Field Director, Darren C. Browne:

Locals can most certainly apply. The process is much simpler than that for international volunteers, and the two-month time period does not apply. Simply complete the attached form and send the data back to this email address, along with a copy of your CV. You will be considered along with our other local applicants.

The Sentebale Polo Cup in Barbados with Prince Harry

Posted by Monique in Events on February 2nd, 2010

The very next day after Prince Harry played and won (with the help of his team) the inaugural Sentebale Polo Cup in Barbados, The Daily Mail published the following article:

Prince Harry falls head-first from his horse during charity polo match, and hurls his mallet in disgust

‘Everyone from our local supporters to the Barbados government have bent over backwards to make this work for Sentebale. People have dug so deep in their pockets.

‘It looks like we may have raised £500,000 for the vulnerable children of Lesotho, so I couldn’t be more pleased.

‘We are going to try to take the Sentebale Cup around the world but will definitely be coming back to Barbados as we have started it here and the island has such a special place in our hearts.’

Harry was playing at the exclusive Apes Hill Polo Club in Barbados to raise money for Sentebale, the charity he co-founded in memory of his late mother to help vulnerable Aids orphans in the African kingdom of Lesotho.

The 1,200 ticket match was a complete sell out and is expected to raise more than £100,000. Harry hopes to make the Sentebale Polo Cup an annual event.

I attended this event and spectated both matches.  The crowd was heaving, most people were in their sunday best, drinks were flowing and both matches were played extremely well by all players.  Here are a few pictures I took with my phone…

Most of Prince Harry, of course! ;)

Around 6pm, as the sun was setting, the after party began with the arrival of a mechanical bull, which as you can imagine, was definitely a laugh to watch.  The guy operating the machine was definitely giving the old and young a hell of ride, with a couple of them flying off onto the inflated cushion surrounding it, so no one was hurt (at least to the best of my knowledge!)..

I left after 7 but I understand that the party went on for quite a few more hours.

Did any of you make this event?  If so, did you enjoy it?

An enjoyable afternoon at Silverpoint hotel

Posted by Monique in Services on January 24th, 2010

Silverpoint hotel is the newly refurbished Silver Rock hotel which is located on the South East coast of the island (about 5 minutes from the airport).

Last thursday, on Errol Barrow Day, four of us headed down to this boutique hotel to have a late lunch and ended up staying way after the sun had set.

The pool, bar and restaurant area is set up quite nicely, with lounges positioned on the deck so that you face the caribbean sea and witness the ballsy aerial jumps of the 20 odd kite surfers zooming so close to the deck that you think their kite is going to swoop down and get you!

If you want to spend the entire day at Silverpoint, they do offer a US$20 day pass which allows you to use all of their facilities…

Not sure if they offer local accommodation rates but I’m trying to find that out and will keep you posted.

Visit their website to find out more about this kite surfer’s paradise!

Nice weather, good people and great music at jazz on de hill

Posted by Monique in Events on January 22nd, 2010

Last Saturday, from around 2 in the afternoon, my boyfriend and I met up with a few friends at the 2010 Barbados Jazz Festival at Farley Hill.  We found our friends positioned to the left of the stage on a large picnic blanket with a cooler full of wine (thanks Barry and Onika!), plenty of paleau and pigtail (a Springer favourite) and some interesting romaine wrapped chicken salad ’sandwiches’, along with some more chicken salad and rice crackers for those of us with high maintenace diets! (much love Sealy!)

We listened to the worldly rhythms of  TIZER featuring Karen Briggs, Chieli Minucci & Lao Tizer, the cool tunes of Bwakore and danced to the soul/R&B music of the metro-sexual (no offense robin!) super sexy, heartthrob, Robin Thicke.

The atmosphere on Saturday was very chilled. Everyone was enjoying the cool afternoon breeze, a given at Farley Hill; the drinks and food were flowing; some people were dancing while others sat comfortably on their folding chairs; the performers were fantastic and the DJ even belted out a set of Whitney Houston tunes which everyone, certainly that I could see, seemed to enjoy!

Next stop: St. Lucia Jazz Festival – May 1st to 9th 2010!!

House prices jump 1.2% in first week of January – Dominic Welling, Financial Times Advisor

Posted by Monique in Real Estate on January 21st, 2010

Here’s an interesting article from Financial Times Advisor that I came across the other morning, quoting Commercial Director, Miles Shipside of Rightmove on the surprising ‘increase’ in property prices in the UK since the start of 2010.  Rightmove is one of the top recognised property websites in the UK.

The first week in January saw house prices jump 1.2 per cent, resulting in a total monthly increase of 0.4 per cent, as optimism grew and stock levels remained low, the latest house price index from Rightmove revealed.

This was a yearly increase of 4.1 per cent, and the first positive figure for two months, following monthly falls of 2.2 per cent and 1.6 per cent in December and November respectively.

Miles Shipside, commercial director of Rightmove, acknowledged surprise and said the 0.4 per cent increase was a big turnaround in figures that were on course for a third consecutive monthly fall.
He said: “This rise in asking prices is an early indicator that new sellers in 2010 have the confidence to try for a higher price, as the index was lined up for a fall until the turn of the year.

Source: FT Adviser

What are your thoughts on his opinion of the current status of the property market in the UK and do you think this slight increase in property prices is in indeed a sign that property owners are regaining their confidence in the market and that supply will outweigh demand later on the year?
